Before We Start

This isn't a theory post. We took a real wig that came back from a week-long LARP event and cleaned it. Here's exactly what happened.

The wig: WigIsFashion style LFK5558 (synthetic lace front)
The condition after 7 days of wear: Tangled, stiff, stained with glue and foundation
The customer's words: "I almost threw this one away"

What You'll Need

Tool Why It Works
Garment steamer Synthetic fibers soften with heat – makes detangling faster
Wide-tooth comb Prevents fiber breakage
Fabric softener Breaks down sweat and dirt without harsh chemicals
Synthetic wig conditioner (optional) Adds softness back
Cool water Hot water damages synthetic fibers permanently
Hair dryer (cool setting) Air drying takes too long; cool heat is safe
Synthetic wig care spray Helps comb through and adds shine

Step 1: Detangle – The Tata Method

We asked Tata, our Chief Wig Designer, to show us how she handles post-LARP wigs. With over 15 years of experience designing and caring for synthetic wigs, she's seen it all.

Here's her rule: start from the ends, always.

Why this works: Synthetic fibers get micro-kinks from sweat and friction. Using heat (steamer) plus combing from the bottom up relaxes these kinks without breaking fibers.

On the LFK5558: The worst tangles were at the nape (where the wig rubs against the collar). This section took about 3-4 minutes. The rest was faster.

Pro tip from Tata: Don't pull. If you hit a knot, stop, add more steam, and use your fingers to loosen it first.

Step 2: Deep Clean

Fill a basin with cool water. Add a capful of fabric softener( and a little bit conditioner).

Submerge the wig for 5 minutes. No RUSH!

After soaking:

  • Gently rub the lace front area to remove excess oil, glue, and foundation

  • Rinse with cool running water from the top down until the water runs clear

What we didn't do: No hot water, no harsh scrubbing, no panic.

Step 3: Dry Gently and Easily

After rinsing, gently squeeze out excess water .

Place the wig on a wig stand. Spray a little synthetic wig care spray.

Starting from the ends, gently comb the hair upward in sections. Use a hair dryer on cool setting and slowly dry the hair while combing through.

Tata's note: Do not use high heat. Do not rub the hair with a towel. Both will create frizz that can't be fixed.

On the LFK5558: About 10 minutes later, the wig was dry, soft, and completely tangle-free.

WigIsFashion's Customer's Response

We sent photos back to the customer who lent us the wig. Her exact words:

"OMG! I was ready to throw it away."

Please Note : We don't sell a special "LARP wig wash kit." We're not trying to upsell you. We're sharing this because we see customers throw away wigs after conventions and LARP events. Based on 15 years of experience, with proper care, WigIsFashion wigs can be used up to six months .
